Don’t mention the war bears

The American government is apparently so paranoid that one of its scientists might actually let slip an aknowledgement of global warming that it has requested that they not mention “sensitive” topics such as polar bears when travelling abroad to conferences and the like. Go read the article and let me know what you think of the “new openness” in American science. Or, as I now refer to it, the “stick to the script, bitches” program.

  1. How does this differ from the Canadian government policy, where there are designated media contacts on each issue? Scientists/pservants are supposed to refer the media to the appropriate spokesperson.

  2. Having specified media contacts on a topic is one thing. Singling out “change, sea ice, and/or polar bears” as per the article is pernicious politicization of science.

Pernicious politicization – you can tell I’m starting to read books again! Watch out!
