As a reformed Catholic (read “atheist”), every now and then I like to see what kind of fun the Mother Church is having. This weekend, being Easter, is as always marked by absurdities galore, from Philipinos nailing themselves to crosses, to the Pope speaking to the multitudes of the invisible man in the sky. This year`s Good Friday address shows the pope has at least identified the problems the Church is having in a world seemingly drifting toward reality secularism, however, naturally he manages to deflect from the real issues:
We are shocked to see to what levels of brutality human beings can sink. Jesus is humiliated in new ways even today. When things that are most holy and profound in the faith are being trivialised, the sense of the sacred is allowed to erode.
Umm, yeah – in an era of unprovoked war, religious terrorism, and nuclear-armed theocracies, the real problem is not *enough* religion. Christ! Oops, the old Catholicism sometimes slips in.
Happy holiday, all – enjoy the eggs, gefilte fish, or whatever.
